Whaler

My Whaler series grew out of a desire to whisper where larger works speak in a deeper, more imposing voice. I wanted to honor the magnificent presence of the ocean’s great giants, but in a quieter register—capturing the way a whale passes beneath the surface, close enough to reshape the water, yet almost soundless.

For these sculptures, I chose slighter, more refined pieces of driftwood from my walks along the New Jersey shoreline—boards worn smooth by tides and weathered into elegant, natural curves. Rather than building up dense mass, I followed single, uninterrupted lines from head to tail, letting just a few supporting fragments suggest the sweeping volume of the body. Whaler One captures the grounded strength and gentle presence of these creatures, while Whaler Too reduces the whale to its absolute essence: one sweeping arc, a gentle rise, and a soft taper.

Working this minimally is its own discipline. Every piece of wood has to earn its place. I spent long evenings swapping out nearly identical lengths until the balance felt completely effortless—as if the forms were gliding forward through open water with no resistance at all. The subtle grain and color shifts in the reclaimed Atlantic wood do the heavy visual work, hinting at muscle, fin, and fluke without demanding literal detail.

On the wall, these pieces capture a pause in motion—the moment between breaths when everything above the surface goes still. Placed individually, either sculpture brings a serene, meditative presence to spaces meant for rest. Displayed together, Whaler One and Whaler Too create a quiet dialogue between power and restraint, offering a refined, contemporary take on marine art born entirely from wood shaped by tide and time.
